Safe Online For Kids And Family
Please add this page to your
homepage
to help make the internet a safe place for all ages
Tips for Kids:
- ( Print this out and place near
your computer so you won't forget!! )
- Just as you stay away from strangers on the street, be careful about strangers on the Internet. If anyone uses bad language or mentions things that make you uncomfortable, don't respond and log off.
- Never agree to meet with someone you've talked with on the Internet without asking permission from your parents first. If your parents agree to a meeting, make sure it's in a public place and you bring a parent with you.
- Never send a person your picture or give any personal information such as your address, telephone number, parents' work address/telephone number, or the name and location of your school or password without your parents' permission.
- Let your parents know right away if you come across any information that makes you feel uncomfortable.
- Never respond to any messages that are mean or in any way make you feel uncomfortable. If you do, tell your parents right away so that they can contact the online service.
- Follow the rules of Internet use established by your parents or teachers. That includes selected web sites, time of day and amount of time online and to whom you can send e-mail.
Tips for Parents:
- Keep your computer in family area to better monitor your child's activity.
- Regularly spend time online with your child to learn about his or her interests and activities.
- Teach your child to end any experience online when he or she feels uncomfortable or scared by pressing the back key, logging off, and telling a trusted adult as soon as possible.
- Establish an atmosphere of trust and understanding with your child by not blaming him or her for uncomfortable online experiences.
- Discuss the difference between advertising and educational or entertaining content and show your child examples of each.
- Establish strict rules for ordering products ( and then monitor credit card bills ).
- Share your child's e-mail account and password.
- Talk with your child about the people he or she is meeting online.
- Get to know the services your child uses. If you don't know how
to log on, get your child to show you. Find out what types of information
it offers and whether there are ways for parents to block out objectionable
material.
- Never allow a child to arrange a face-to-face meeting with another
computer user without parental permission. If a meeting is arranged,
make the first one in a public spot, and be sure to accompany your
child.
- Encourage your children to tell you if they encounter messages
or bulletin board items that are suggestive, obscene, belligerent,
threatening, or make them feel uncomfortable. If you or your child
receive a message that is harassing, of a sexual nature, or threatening,
forward a copy of the message to your service provider and ask
for their assistance.
- Complain to the sender of unsolicited email and to your Internet
Service Provider ( ISP ) about unwanted e-mail.
(ex. AOL, Mindspring, Juno, Interpath, Netzero, MSN, earthlink )
