Tie a fine thread in the middle of the needle so it balances. The needle will swing to a north-south position. Mark the north end with a felt-tip marker or paint. Paper Clip Compass: Bend a steel paper clip. Stroke the top of the "J" with a magnet. Balance the compass on a coin or smooth surface and it will swing to a north-south position. Mark the north end as above.
